OSTC is very proud to share the amazing achievement of James Dean, Senior Trader from our Swansea office who came first in the ITU World Triathlon Grand Final held in Rotterdam between 14th to 17th September.
I knew I was the fittest I have ever been leading up to the race but you really are clueless to the standard of the competition as they are coming from all over the world. With domestic races you get to know people so have a rough idea of the quick boys. The bike course was very technical and narrow and as it was drafting I knew that getting away at the front of the swim and forming a breakaway was key. I had a very good swim coming out in the top 3 and we formed a good group of about 5 on the bikes. The language barriers were a slight issue as I had Brazilian, Dutch and French guys in the pack and my language skills are not the best however they understood the usual expletives in English to encourage them to keep working. When we got into T2 and onto the run I knew I had a good chance at the win as I have been running really well recently. I just got my head down and nailed the first 1km and got a gap on the other guys, from there on I just made sure I hurt myself and managed to run a 16min 5km, which is the fastest I have ever run a 5km in a triathlon before.
It was a great experience and was fantastic to race for GB against other countries. It wrapped up a great season for me in which I am now Welsh Sprint Champion, British Sprint Champion (25-30 age) and World Sprint Champion (25-30 age). Over the winter now I am going to really focus on my running and try and get my 10km/5km times down to as close to 32min/15mins as possible. Then next year I will be doing the European sprint distance champs, which are in Glasgow.
